Patterns of thought not only influence our words and actions (see last week’s post – Stuck between two worlds) but also how we process somebody else’s words.
Ever felt like your staff won’t do whats on their agenda. Even simple tasks you have broken down for them in many conversations already.
Well, they might seem simple in your world, within your patterns of thought. In someone else’s world there might be patterns of thought, that hinder them getting the message.
Just picture it like your inbox. Your collegue said he has send you an email at least twice already but you didn’t receive it. You can’t find it until you get the hint to look in your spam folder. It was there, but you didn’t realize it. Hence it wouldn’t have made sense for your collegue to send it over again.
Well, this is why it also doesn’t make sense to repeat the tasks over and over again to your staff to get them to do what you want them to do. Rather try to figure out why the message isn’t received.
– Is there a problem in communicating or understanding it!?
– Are differing patterns of thought the reason why your staff cannot fulfill the tasks?
Always keep in mind the different backgrounds we bring along.
